Bye, Bye Summer!

What better way to say goodbye to summer then a Cubs game! The teacher's union had free Cubs tickets for teachers! How nice! That is when you know the Cubs stink - they are giving away tickets! They never give away seats! We got 4 tickets and considered bringing Shane, but it was a cool night and the seats were in pairs & located in different sections. Instead, we dropped off Shane at his Aunt Jorie's and gave the other seats to my parents. It turns out that there were plenty of open seats so we all sat together.
Here is Shane playing with Aunt Jorie before we left.

Walking into Wrigley Field - the best ballpark anywhere!

The view from our seats!

My parents in their seats.

Look at what Dan is wearing!!!! A CUBS Jersey!!!!

The iconic scoreboard!

The next day brought ninety degree temperatures. I had a feeling it might be the last of them, considering it was September 23rd, so we got out the kiddie pool for one last swim! I planned on cleaning out the pool - since it had been in the garage for a few weeks, and then filling it with a combination of hose water and warm water from the house. Shane was not having that - he wanted in that pool instantly so I had to fill it with the hose. It was COLD! I was sure he would only be in there for a few minutes, but I could not get him out! He was in there for 45 minutes before taking a break! Here are a few pool pictures.

And some video so you can see how much fun he was having! It was great!

Shane found the watering can outside and watered like we do - it was so cute!

What else is Shane up to? Well, he falls more in love with Thunder every day! Shane is very good with Thunder and Thunder is amazing with Shane!

Shane's obsession with balloons has also continued! He is crazy about them! We went to Home Depot to take advantage of the appliance rebate program and we purchased a new washing machine! YAY!!!! It arrives this week! Anyway, Home Depot had balloons taped to the poles in the store and Shane saw them and wanted one - badly. I tried to explain that they were attached to the pole and that he could not have one - can you guess how well that went over? Thankfully, a really nice employee took two off of the pole and gave them to him! He ran around with them for days! You will see in these pictures that he also still had the green balloon from the Jamie Lee Curtis book signing.

I found a really cool idea for homemade Halloween decorations in a magazine & showed it to Dan and he ran with it! Dan made witch and ghost patterns, purchased plywood, traced the patterns on the plywood, cut them out with a saw, and then painted them! I love how handy he is!
Here are a witch and a ghost before they were cut out!

Dan asked me to come out and hold the plywood down as he cut. Shane was playing outside, but soon decided he wanted to help his daddy out - how cute! My favorite is the one of Shane and Dan! They are a great team!

After helping daddy for a bit, Shane found his kiddie pool and tried to drag it into the house so he could swim. Too funny!

Here Shane and Dan show off there project! Shane was so proud! We were both so proud of Dan!

Here are the final products! I was supposed to paint them, but Dan did it for me - I do love him!!! Dan just has to insert the stakes into them so they can go on the lawn! I think they look amazing! Oh, and check out the pumpkin, Dan did not want to waste the scrap wood so he made a pumpkin out of it!

In other news, Shane has a girlfriend! The little girl who lives behind us is 8 and she has been coming over to play with Shane quite a bit lately. Shane is in love! It is so cute how excited he gets when he sees her! Here they are on the swing!

She tried to push Shane on his bike.

She brought her dog over and Shane loved that!

Look how sad he was when she went home!

Dan and I wanted to get a new tree in our yard when Shane was born so he could grow up with his tree. We never got around to doing it until last week. Our neighbor is a landscaper and he put in a peach tree in our yard and some bushes along the side of the house. Well, Shane is loving helping his daddy water the new tree! He also loves fall evenings in the back yard! What am I going to do in the winter???

Last Wednesday Dan and I were honored at a Chicago Foundation of Education 25th anniversary gala at the Four Seasons in Chicago. I was assuming that they would be honoring a ton of teachers - I was wrong - There were only 10 and Dan and I were 2 of the 10! What an honor! Bill Curtis narrated a short video using video of the 10 teachers - what an honor to have Bill Curtis talking about us!!! We will be getting a copy of the video and can't wait! Jorie watched Shane again- he is so lucky to have an aunt who loves him so much!
Here are a few pictures I took of them before I left for the evening. Jorie bought Shane a new Elmo camera and he LOVES it!

Here we are with some of the other honored teachers and staff from the Chicago Foundation for Education.

Here Dan and I with Bill Curtis who MC'd the event! He was so nice!

While Dan and I were being honored, our newest niece - great niece actually, was born! Colleen had her beautiful baby girl - Julia Grace Habel. She is so beautiful and looks just like her big brother Liam! We headed over to see them yesterday afternoon. Here are a few pictures!

We were not able to see Julia before yesterday because Thunder had to have some emergency surgery last Friday when Colleen came home from the hospital. We had just been to the vet and I told her that Thunder was shaking his ears a bit. We were cleaning them out, but they still seemed to bother him. Dr. Prunsky looked at his ears and determined that they were allergies, no infection. She gave me a mild antibiotic and more ear cleaner. 5 days later, when I went to clean his ear at night, I found his ear filled with fluid - not the ear canal, but the floppy part of the ear. It looked like a small water balloon in the floppy part of his ear. I googled it right away since the vet was closed and I wanted to see if this warranted a trip to an emergency vet. I quickly learned that Thunder had an Aural Hematoma. One of his blood vessels ruptured from shaking his ear and the ear filled with blood. There is nowhere for the blood to drain, so it must be surgically removed & the ear stiched together in multiple places so it does not return. The blood can also be aspirated, but always comes back so surgery is recommended. At 14, we were thrilled to know that his blood work all came back normal and the surgery was a success. He goes back to the vet next week for a check, but the stitches stay in for 3 weeks. It is very hard to keep Shane away from the ear because he loves his Thunder so much! Here is kissing him after he came home. Yes, Shane crawled right into the Elizabethan Collar!

Shane and I headed to Brookfield Zoo with our friends Cathy and Alex. Unfortunately, I forgot the camera in the car. Cathy took a few pictures and Shane and I can't wait to go back. The animals were out and he was in love! He was shrieking for joy as he watched the dolphins, snow leopards, and penguins! It was so fun to watch! You can see one of the snow leopards sleeping in the background of one of our pictures.

We celebrated my Dad's birthday last Friday with my sister and jason and my Aunt Joan & Cy. It turns out that Cy's birthday is this week so we added his name to one of the cakes and celebrated both birthdays! We love him and are so excited to have him in our family!
Here Aunt Joan (who I cut off a bit in this shot - sorry!), Cy, Dan & Shane check out the birthday cakes!

The birthday boy, or Papa as Shane calls him!

Shane & Dan!

OK, I am almost done - I promise! I just have to share one more thing. My little man has begun a new tradition of long hugs before he goes to sleep. He only gives them to me (I feel bad for Dan, but they make me feel so special!) so it is not a ploy to stay up later. It is so precious. Dan snapped this picture the other night - mid-hug. I hate the picture of me, but love the moment and my amazing little boy!

OK, Shane wants to welcome his new cousin Julia to the world and wish all of his family members with October birthdays well wishes! Happy birthday Papa Shneider, Cy, Grandma Greenfield, Aunt Geri, Cousin Tommy, & 'Aunt' Kristine!
